Yoga is a Sankrit word of Hindu origin meaning "union" or "joining" and implies that, in its practice, yoga is a joining of the mind and body to promote inner harmony as well as physical health and well being.
Yoga dates back over 5000 years and was originated in Northern India by priests practicing the Veda religion who were searching for an alternative to ritual sacrifice. A desire for longevity and a deeper self understanding gave birth to the system of physical and mental exercises we have come to call Yoga.
Over many centuries yoga took on different forms for those who celebrated its practice - meditation, a desire to master self control, a means of solidifying the connection between the mind, body & spirit, and a tool for stress relief & pain management are just a few.
Yoga made its debut in the United States sometime during the sixites and most widely spread during the eighties as a means of low impact exercise targeting weight loss and flexibility.

Yoga is a combination of poses and breathing techniques that when practiced regularly can have a profound effect of the physical health of the body.
Regular participation in a yoga regime can improve circulation, reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol, aide in weight loss and weight management, reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine headaches, help to manage muscle and joint pain, increase flexibilty, & reduce stress and anxiety.
Personal practice in Yoga is ever evolving - the varying levels of advancement and combinations of positions create a structure that is anything but routine.
